Are all the Lionel LionChief engines geared the same or are there any that are geared extra low and would be good for switching??

DCS and TMCC controls are great for switching engines work very well but was looking for a LionChief engine to let the kids try some switching at shows!

The Williams engines are geared very high if you want to run fast they are great but no good for switching. I used a LionChief control unit from a worn out engine and swapped the controls into a Williams engine but you have to have the dial turned up fairly high to get the Williams Diesel rolling and then it takes off and runs at a fairly high speed.

I have the Southern NW2 2401A LionChief Plus switcher. It barely moves at the lowest speed setting and the remote couplers open correctly. The manual says minimum O31 curves but it handles O27 switches smoothly.  I am very pleased with it.

I have the same engine and would like to find the 2401B for future purchase.   Amazing slow, medium speeds.   All around great engine!

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Trainworld has some LionChief Plus Diesel engines on clearance for $199.  Just ordered an NW2 that I will repaint to a local railroad. Think this will be great I have LionChief controls on the fence for some 14 other trains the little kids can run at shows, bolted down so they can only go forwards and stop and trains go in circles.

But with the NW2 I am looking forward to putting together a small switching layout with some instruction booklets for some older children complex switching problems sorting some cars. Idea is to let older kids come in read the instructions while one kid is running the switching, then they get there turn. Perhaps will time them to see who gets the best time.
