2035. Headlight, smoke, whistle and Magnetraction. It would only be better if it was a 4-6-2.
Penny the trailing truck is an easy swap with the 675 type. and one of the mags had a story several years back on swapping a 4 wheeled pilot.
I'm with all the posts on the 2026 loco. Like others, it was a Christmas present from my Dad - first train set in 1952. It is my "go to" engine. Still chugs along the rails just fine. I treasure it and the complete set. Must admit, I did convert it to liquid smoke, though. In the process of constructing my "dream" layout with lots of modern motorized units, but this one will always be there on its own spur.

I recently got a 1666, and I love it. Too much fun!
While I like the 027 steamers (and I have a bunch of them), my wife's asthma prevents me from running them in the house. As a result I have developed a real appreciation for Lionel's 027 Alcos. The ones with magnatraction are great pullers and the buzzer horns are a kick. I recently took the lowest end one, swapped on traction tire wheels and put an MRC sound system in it. My grandson loves it! Blow the horn grandpa!!!

I got the 2026 as a Christmas present for my 6th birthday in 1991. I still have it and it runs great. My 3 year-old loves pushing it around the tracks.
ROGER1 posted:Another thing you might want to try with those Alcos (I done this with 3 of my sets). I added a motor and power truck to the dummy and tethered it to the e-unit in the front engine. They are pulling animals now.

I thought I was the only one that did this, the 2023 just doesn't have much traction. I added power to the trailing A unit not so much for more power but to distribute it over more wheels.
Bogie
Good job, Bogie,
Now add some chip LEDs behind those two red marker lights and a 5 mil warm white behind the headlight and you'll have some awesome looking engines.

Same here, although mine arrived at Christmas, 1951. My first train. It still runs and looks just fine. Most of the year, it lives on my coffee table, with a couple of streamlined Lionel Lines passenger cars. But at Christmas time, it comes out of retirement to make its annual holiday tour on my layout. When that whistle blows, it's 1951 all over again.
It has to be my 682 that Santa brought at Christmas in 1954 when I was 9. I am now converting it to TMCC with Railsounds.
My favorite 027 engine is the one I am running if it is operating as it is suppose to.

PS It is hard to beat the Lionel 2035
2056 Hudson. Early 50's era.

Mine is the little 1655 2-4-2, came before the whole "scout" series that cheapened the little engine. Packing a nice double reduction gear motor, 3 position E unit, headlight and really heavy diecast shell, along with a metal "coffin style" tender with whistle. Was my father's originaly, gotten for Christmas in 1949, gotten second hand from thier neighbors who's boys lost interest. Been in our family ever since. Mike

That one's next on my list!
Mine would be either my 2359 B&M GP-9 or my 736 with 2671W
I have enjoyed this thread with some laughs because I have or had most engines mentioned and agree with most of them.
Johnstrains, I have a set of Erie A-A Alcos from the 50's I am willing to sell. Contact me off line and we can go from there.
2023 for the win ! My first Lionel locomotive.....whadda chooch ! Allowed the retirement of my awful Marx 666 ! Yellow and gray, of course.
