I have a ton of early to mid Proto 2.0 engines with the higher voltage boards.  When my GG1 board went bad it had to be fully converted, at a cost just under the price of a new engine, to a low voltage proto 2.0 board as the old boards are "not available".  Next time that occurs what are my converison options, other than a dummy, and who can do it for me?  Options such as conventional and tmcc, eob, or so on.  What options are on the table when the failure occurs?

John,  I can speak to the MTH options.  I have several 5V boards that are used that could be installed as direct replacements.  The other route is a PS-2 3V board with the 5V connectors.  You have to change out the speaker and battery with harness.  MTH has a repair kit for this.  The retail is about $234 plus labor which is usually more reasonable then an upgrade.

Then there is the upgrade kit conversion to 3V all the way.  The kit is cheaper, and this works best on diesels, but labor is usually higher.  Or a conventional option with horn/bell.

I do MTH Repairs and upgrades and can be contacted via my profile e-mail.

Usually this all revolves around the value of the loco and it's condition.  Sometime older well used engines have brittle harness and other worn items that the full conversion is better.   G
