Thanks for all the replies to my previous topic on looking for a Lionel Sante Fe F3 Set. In doing some research I've seen a number of references to replacement shells for these units. Where there any issues with the original release that I need to look out for when hunting for a set?

If my memory serves me correctly the red was off, flat, on the originals. Lionel swapped (?) them out for glossy red.
Kevin: As I recall, the main issue with the shells was that they were painted a matte-finish red instead of the gloss red everyone had expected. With all the clamor this generated, Lionel produced replacement shells with gloss finish paint to those that wanted them.
Heard it was the color/finish compared to what they expected.

Actually, I have so many SF. I thought the off red ...wasn’t that bad...if you find a good deal buy them.
Did anyone shoot a quick coat of clear gloss on them?
Hmm, I have the full A-B-A set, original and the replacement shells. The difference is relatively minor. Would be nice to sell them one of these days.

I've never seen any Sam. Would add some shine though the rivet counters might still say the color is off.
