Why real trams have beveled corners

This portion of video clearly shows the close clearance for street trams on a curve in an intersection!

After 42:00 in the video, the street trams diverge onto former suburban railway right-of-way which had been abandoned before it was rebuilt for light rail service.

I recall seeing pics of Toronto tram track junctions in the street where there were warning signs about certain newer trams would not clear others.
