I picked up a Williams brass A/B shark B/O diesel set.I noticed that both the A and B units are powered.I always thought the B units were dummies.I was wondering if this B unit is factory powered or if it was later modified.

Mine has a dummy "B" unit; Not sure about others.

Love these things (no swinging pilot!). All they need is the correct AAR ("Alco") truck side frames and modern electronics. My A-B set is powered/dummy. Probably will never get upgraded. Sounds like you scored a nice piece.
I don't know the facts here, but low-production brass items, especially back then, were often produced in un-catalogued variations. Or he bought the motors and added them.
That fixed pilot, though, would make it fairly impossible to couple to rolling stock and stay coupled in the 3-rail world. So? They weren't sold as switchers, anyway - and most 3RO steamers can't front-couple, either.
I have a set of these A-B brass Sharknose Williams in NYC livery. Mine had a dummy B unit but I upgraded it with a Williams power upgrade set several years ago. One of these days I might put ERR TMCC in both A&B with railsounds. One of these days when I am resting with nothing else to do.
It was modified. There was two motors in the powered A unit and a non-powered B unit.
Here are pictures of my Modified Williams Brass Sharks:
IT's an A-B-B set
The body is BRass, the drivetrain and frame have been taken from the Last run of Williams Sharks

Are these good runners? Dealer has a new set for $75!
If it's original, they have non flywheel mabuchi can motors. They are powerful. It issue is stopping. The oem motors have no flywheel so if you cut power, the train will attempt to stop on a dime. I believe timko can get you the flywheel motors for a smoother stop.
