I have both versions. Made by Samhongsa they are simple with not much details yet rugged locos.
We have one in the club and it vibrates and buzzes like an old Helldiver on a dive bombing run. It vibrated so badly that it ate up the bearings in the gearbox. One of the club members fixed it, but when the owner runs it, you can hear it above the din of the whole rest of the layout.
It is a good looking loco, though.
I would have a machinist spend some time balancing the flywheel before running it.
Then I would run it to see how it holds up before investing the money for the TMCC conversion.
williams made 2 versions of the prr k4-early and moderm-early version was made in 1987 yellow box-i heard the motors were not that good that were installed-the later versions 1989 version -modern-dark red box -had a better motor installed.
i have 4 williams brass steamers-nyc scale dreyfuss 1995-super detailed-1989 prr k4 modern-1990 prr mikasdo and up challenger.they have a nice clean look and feel to them for their time.mike wolf was working for williams then when these engines were made for jerry williams.enjoy your engine -there are forum members who have more knowledge on williams brass than me-you should get better replys-joe
thanks i will try the bullfrog snot for the traction tires and as for the way the loco runs i bench tested it and ran it in for an hour in both forward and reverse and it ran fine with no noise or wobble, a little whine from the motor but i think that was because the loco was upside down in its cradle for run in. i will let everyone know if this changes when i run it on the layout.
i finally got to run this loco and it runs great and no problems with it it pulls good and does not wobble or make much noise when running. now i want to get it converted to tmcc hopefully with sound but electric railroad company dosent have sound for a pacific loco so dont know about that conversion yet, i will let you know how it turns out,
just an update to this old input I was able to get this converted actually to the newest tmcc version and sound and boy it works and sounds great and so far it has been able to pull eight scale sized lionel and kline heavy weight passenger cars with no problems and really looks great doing it hope to take some pictures and maybe I can post them to the forum to show .
Picture would be nice. Glad you got a good one. Who did the TMCC conversion for you?
I have one of these buried in my closet. It runs fine as a conventional locomotive, but to convert to command it'll need a smoke unit replacement as well. I'm thinking PS/2 for this one.
actually I did the conversion myself including a new smoke unit and new lighting system
what kind of smoke unit did you use? Inquiring minds would like to know!
There's plenty of space in there, I trial-fit a MTH PS/1 smoke unit and it seems that it'll be no problem to use that one.
