I recently picked up a Williams "Girls" passenger set for a good price - couldn't pass up the comedy of a pink GG-1 and matching passenger cars cruising around our ceiling layout.  I also figured this would be a perfect train set for my daughter, but wanted to upgrade it to PS-2 and upgrade the somewhat plain passenger cars a little bit.  Here's my progress to date:

My first order of business was the PS-2 upgrade.  I stumbled into an awesome deal on a lightly using Railking GG-1 and intended to swap the electronics over to the pink Williams.  You can imagine my pleasant surprise when I realized that the shells are identical - right down to the interior bracing, details, and position of the screws.  Glad both companies stayed true to the traditional semi-scale GG-1!  In half an hour, I had a pink GG-1 with PS-2.  Took another 2 mins to rename the engine in DCS.

Next order of business was the lack of end-of-car diaphragms.  I ordered 5 replacement K-line diaphragms from the lionel parts site (2 per coach, 1 for the observation, and none for the baggage), modified them slightly, and glued them into place on each car.  There's still sufficient clearance for O-31 curves.  Much better:

I also replaced the lighting in each car with LED strips for Golden Gate Depot.  They are a perfect fit in these Williams cars.  The look is about the same (though uneven-ness of lighting is slighly improved), but my intent here was merely to reduce the current draw.

Next, I began modifications specific to the observation car.  I added a lighted drumhead (courtesy of Dan's Drumheads) and some aftermarket marker lamps.  Still troubleshoting getting those 1.5V lamps to light, but we'll get there.  The drumhead works great, but (especially in the close-up pic) seems a little large for these particular cars.  Here's the progress so far:

I should note that this train was intented to be a surprise 3rd b-day present for my daughter, but she woke up in the middle of the night last night and caught me working on it.  Needless to say, she was excited to see the pink train and (much to my delight) insisted on helping me work on it.  It was a lot of fun having a little train buddy!  She grabbed "her" screwdriver (I was't allowed to use it), and began working the screws (which I was also not allowed to help with).

Next steps include replacing all of the window silhouettes (each car has four indentical strips, see below) with pictures of family and painting a couple details onto the cars (such as maybe making the top of each step black, etc.).  More updates to come!

Jerry,

My plan right now is to print the pictures directly onto a transparent sticker (in same pattern as the original removed silhouette), adhere it to vellum or wax paper, then cut it to size and glue it in place.  If that doesn't work, I may try printing the picture and a generic solid background directly onto a transparency.

I wonder if those clear address labels would work?

Thanks for the great idea of using real people photos, and family all the better!

Address labels would probably work well too.  I actually had those in my hand before I found some Avery full sheet size transparent stickers (for an inkjet printer) at Office Max-  figured the full sheet gave me more flexibility and might ultimately be easier.

Dustin, I have to say I am very envious of your assistance from your daughter.   I was so desperate to get my daughter to take an interest in my hobby that I bought her a SF Blue Goose because that is her favorite color and then when she said she like little trains I jumped on an N scale layout and the entire Milwaukee Road Hiawatha train set. The most she ever participated with me was when she repainted one of my train crews as women with long blond hair.

Cherish that time with her.  My daughter just turned 13 now so time flies and dear old dad just isn't cool to hang around anymore.

That project is looking great.  Yes, I did try to entice her with the girl's set too.

I like what you did with the pink girl's set, very interesting.

Maybe I can upgrade one of my Williams SD-45's to PS-2 for very little money.

I changed the direction of an SD-45 cab and chassis for a Williams, had to drill new holes in the frame for the top to mount to the frame.

I know that the body of a Williams is very close to Lionel in most cases, but the motor assemblies and frames don't match up.

So, it's been a while since I've updated this topic, but I finally got around to working some more on these pink train cars this past weekend.

I'd initially planned to put family members in as "passengers" in the pink cars by shrinking down various photos and printing them on translucent sticker paper.  I learned (through experimentation) that inkjet printing on a transluscent surface doesn't make a very solid/visible image, though.  It tends to look washed-out once separated from the backing and backlit.

So, instead, I took "mug shots" of all my daughter's favorite stuffed animals and printed them on white sticker paper, which I then affixed to clear plastic (for rigidity) and installed in cars (after removing and discarding the sihouettes).  The stuffed animals are clearly visible as passengers and even look decent when backlit.  Not a lot of points for realism, but that's not really the intent here.  This one's for fun and, most importantly, my daughter loves it.

I had my daughter help arrange the animals in the windows... which was really a fortuitous decision.  It turns out there are very specific rules as to which animals need to be grouped together on the train, and who needs to be near who.

Every one knows when a child says " I want to see it" they mean they want to hold and examine it! Excellent stories on all the kids.
