These came out somewhere around 2005 and probably were some of the first Legacy engines. The fan "sticks" although the smoke unit produces smoke. After removing the smoke unit's top cover I found the fan could manually be moved freely. With the smoke element unplugged and track power applied I let the fan operate continuously for an hour, thinking maybe it would break in better. Again, upon power down, then up, it wouldn't unless nudged. I tried a few drops of Labelle 108 (light) lube but no luck. I don't know if there is a problem with the motor or if the fan/shaft is binding somewhere. I haven't figured out how to remove the plastic fan from the motor shaft. I think the whole smoke unit can be removed if unscrewed from the chassis. Any thoughts? I included a pic of the chassis in case there were variations.

What did you oil? The shaft bearing is underneath the fan impeller.

To remove the impeller, gently pull on one of the vanes with a neednose plier. It takes a little effort but it will come off.

Oil the shaft then run the motor to get the oil in the bushing.

If it doesn't work after that you'll probably have to replace the fan motor. The fan motor screws are underneath the impeller as well.

Watch the positioning of the impeller on the shafts when replacing . It must be just below the housing so it doesn't rub the pcb, and not too far down so it doesn't rub on the bottom.

My 2nd gen legacy PM Berkshire had the same problem. I actually had to oil it twice but after that it has worked for years ever since without issue.

Thank you for the swift replies. I’m sure I made it harder than it had to be, but I fixed it. I noticed 2 very small access holes on the bottom of the plastic impeller. I aligned the impeller holes to reveal the 2 very small mounting screws and used a jeweler Philips to remove. The motor was easy to then pull down and the fan came off. I checked the motor and it worked flawlessly. Call me Captain Obvious, but I immediately knew the fan was pushed too far down enough to barely scrap the bottom. I got every thing back together and got the proper clearance to where it wouldn’t rub. Very little fan clearance between top and bottom to work with. If I ever run across this again, I’ll slide thin fish line under the impeller and pull up to remove it!
