I found out by accident if you turn smoke units off using cab-2 you also lose the steam whistle effect!  I asked forum member Sinclair about this and he confirmed its designed that way.

but also if you choose the medium or low smoke settings it too affects the smoke output for the steam whistle effect.

the blow down smoke effect is like the steam chest feature on S-3 very temper mental to say the least. I did hold down the key for blow down on cab-2 as another forum member advised to confirm it did make smoke.

I realize the smoke whistle is right where it should be but I would have put it where the metal looking area is a 1/2" further back I find it hard to tell when or if it is actually working I have an idea to remedy that!! well my wife came and said is this part for my new BB? yep it seems a small bag with the whistle detail part

inside it fell out on carpet now I know what that metal round spot is a magnet to hold in in place!!

none of these are deal breakers for me is still a nice engine sounds are awesome and I do believe the liquid smoke vendors can easily sell a 6 pack of fluid for the BB as it took me 40 drops for smoke stacks and blow down feature to work and 30 drops for smoke whistle a total of 110 drops!

but it smokes up a storm now will need new mega steam vanilla/grandpa's pipe scent as I do believe my 2-3 year old bottle has lost its aroma not the vendors fault I bought 2 big bottles but sometimes is 6 months between trains running so as they say less is more!

also a heads up at right rear of drive wheel 2nd wheel from front sits a black screw that holds some very small linkages with a black part? anyways when I was oiling my BB I noticed it had backed out a 1\4" so you might want to check them all to make sure all are tight.

below on both sides where grab rails are molded in see the white areas see if yours are same as mine looks unpainted

then again might be broken or?

now a question what is the reason for that shroud for smoke stacks just curious.

and for some that feel 0-72 and overhang is just terrible I love mine on 0-72 and if memory is correct some 15-20 years ago

it was the largest curve available and everybody liked the large engines on it!

I had 2 areas of concern for clearance of BB on my layout but all is well in that regard and an area with 0-54 on an inner curve at the beginning of curve

is only 3 3\4" center to center next section is almost 5" center to center and no side swiping of any 484 engines and tenders I run on it and BB in same spot

on the outer 0-72 curve has no issues with it either.

this engine was costly but for me the best money spent in a long while.  I wonder how much more cost to have the swinging bell feature what say Lionel??

Those "exhaust hoods" were controlled by the Engineer (small air valve in the cab), and were used to deflect the heavy exhaust rearward, instead of straight up, when entering tunnels. Thus NOT blast the inside roofs of the tunnel. The Challengers had the same apparatus.

thank you  hot water...appreciate the information never knew that.
