Last Saturday I and my train buddy attended the Ted Maurer auction expecting a small crowd due to storm damage and wide spread power outages, but instead there was a large crowd and spirited bidding. The standard gauge I usually go after was, for the most part in lesser condition than I prefer, but I was attracted to this blue Hafner set and my winning bid brought it home. I have an original Lionel standard gauge Blue Comet and I think this set makes an interesting contrast.

My engine does have the screw in key, but I neglected to reattach it after a careful cleaning. I lack reference material on Hafner and I would appreciate any information about this particular set.

Nice example of the blue and cream outfit. Hafner can be hard to pin down exactly due to few catalogs. The 1010 locomotive like yours first appeared in about 1934 and continued until shortly after WWII when it was replaced by the more streamlined 2000 series. Yours has the much rarer sand domes and stacks. A streamlined cowl from the front back to the cab was normal. A 1940 catalog says the blue is new, and your set is No. 13. A dealer price list shows #13 at $14.00 PER DOZEN.

[ed. comment]...  i feel i have to add, i almost missed seeing this post due to yet another case of CTS (Cute Title Syndrome) thinking this was just another rehash of a Lionel Blue Comet reissue.  for &^%$ sake, if the subject is Hafner... say Hafner in the title.  wouldn't something like "Hafner Blue Comet?" been a better choice?

Gary,

Thank you for your input! I have borrowed the book from a friend of mine and I will purchase one for myself. I found it especially interesting that the particular set that I have was often described as "the girls set", at a time when blue was often the given choice for boys and pink for girls.

Regarding your rant on my choice of titles for the post. I'll take the lumps and I did, after the fact, consider adding Hafner to the title, but I never followed up and so my bad. After so many years on this forum, I tend to read or at least skim the most recent posts and I fell into the cute title trap. I have now corrected the title.
