The 2025 smoke unit crank was hanging up, so nothing was coming out of the unit.  I opened things up to check for something that might be preventing a complete cycle.  Comparing the crank in the photo to the Lionel smoke unit parts for 675/2025, mine is clearly different from part 675-13.  The assembly (piston, rod, inner spring, and lever) are all connected as a unit.

I replaced the one shown with the inexpensive reproduction piston and crank and added the 2026-44 spring (thanks to Jeff at the Train Tender).  Smoke unit now puffing away, although it now has a metallic "clink" on each cycle.

My question:  is the piston/lever/crank assembly shown something others have found in a 2025?   I didn't see anything like it in the parts listings.

The first 2025, in 1947, does not have a spring- plunger arrangement.  The crank is  configured to push against the "piston", the inner cup, and that results in the smoke coming out.  I have one of the very early locos, my first post war Lionel engine, and have had it apart a number of times, through the years.  It still runs beautifully.   The later version, which is confirmed by the drawing of the steam chest, that has a coupler molded in, has the spring loaded mechanism. The first 2025s and 675s did not have a molded coupler and the very early ones also had aluminum stacks. I believe the change occurred with an updated casting in  1949-50, perhaps even slightly earlier.
