3/8" thick foam or homasote source?

I've been using 3/8" anti-fatigue mat from Lowes:

Here's a photo of what it looks like on my layout before ballasting:

I cut strips off the mat with a box knife, then bevel the sides on a bandsaw with a fence in place to keep the strip aligned.

I drill holes on either side of a tie and use a zip-tie to hold the mat and track in place.  If I need to move the track I simply cut the zip-ties.

Lowes used to sell it on a roll, not sure if they still do.  At the time I bought mine, I figured it was cheaper than cork roadbed.

The back side of the anti-fatigue mat is smooth and would make for a nice road.

On my old garage layout the entire portion of yard was covered with one big sheet.

If you want quiet, this mat will cut down on the noise.  Adding ballast IMO adds some of the noise back in.  If you can do without the ballast I would do so.

Lima,  I use a lot of 'Gator board' to back my modular building drawings and found that the best place to source the full sheets of the material is through a plastics distributor. Art stores and hobby shops cary it in smaller sheets but the price is higher. My experience with home depot is less than desirable as far as quality goes.

I use Gator board as it is more stable then foam board.
