I was given a 400E Std Gauge MTH Engine. (10-1262-1). I am familiar with O Scale but Standard Gauge is new to me. Before I power this engine up, I wanted to check the battery and replace it with a BCR. This engine is equipped with Proto Sound 2 and has a 3 volt board. So I take it, I  could and should  replace the current battery with a BCR 2? I presume the boards and battery are in the engine vice the tender since there is no  tether connection? How do I remove the shell to access this area? The traction tires are worn as well. If I read the chart correctly,  would they be replaced with 40mm tires? (DE-0000040)

Is there anything else I should be concerned with prior to applying power? I was told the engine last operated about 3 years ago. I have set up a ceiling shelf /around the room layout to run this unit on. (72"curve) I am using MTH Tubular track, also given to me.  The track has very little signs of oxidation. I will clean it with mineral spirits and a green Scotch Pad. I plan to run this engine conventionally. I do have access to a DCS Remote Commander that I could slave in...if that is a viable option?

Thanks in advance for the help.

@Desert Railer I would recommend installing a BCR. I have replaced most of the batteries in my engines with them and they work great. All the electronics are located in the locomotive.

There are six screws that need to be removed to remove the shell. Two on the underside under the cab, two on the back of the cab and one in the smokestack.

I have never seen traction tires on a 400E. Do the tires sit in a groove in the wheel? If not, maybe someone added the tires later. I've never had a traction issue with mine with no tires.

Also make sure to put a small amount of oil on all moving parts and some grease on all the gears. If you remove the center rail pick-up plate from the underside, you can access the gears. The plate removes by unscrewing the two thumb screws.

Thanks Joe and Dan.

I was able to remove the shell. Your detail description help Joe! It made sense once I had the shell off...how to remove it. I was just hesitant the first time.

I did discover a blue Ni-Cd 2.4 volt battery inside. I ordered a BCR to replace it. I removed the one remaining traction tire on the engine and it seems to measure 40mm. It is surprising with the weight of this engine, you'd need tires...but I will order them from MTH as well.

I hope once I install the BCR, all goes well with the start up and run sequence. (Fingers crossed)

This is a nice engine! I can hardly wait to hear the sounds and watch it smoke along the shelf layout.

Thanks again
