I bought a red flat car marked 6511-2 on the bottom. It had a missle cradle and launch platform like that shown in the link (borrowed from Worthpoint website) http://www.worthpoint.com/wort...t-car-ship-253751363. The launch mechanism works some of the time and the gray platform may have some rails broken off.
Where can I find more information on this car?

That is a Lionel 3413 Mercury Capsule launching car.
Tough to find with all the railings intact and the original rocket.
Thanks for the response. I think the rocket, parachute, and capsule are in the box with some other items. I will watch for a replacement platform. Doesn't look bad without the railings.
Out of curiosity, how many cars and accessories did Lionel produce related to rockets and space?
Good luck on the replacement platform. It's a highly desirable part, but you could get lucky.
Lionel has reissued the car several times, but has not made the platforms available.
As far as I know, the part has not been reproduced.
