Mel Tillis, songwriter, singer, comedian, and a Fireman on the Atlantic Coast Line in the early 1950's, has passed from this earthly life. He and I exchanged a couple of railroad anecdotes in 2015.
Interesting ! Did he have the "opportunity" to fire steam? (I say opportunity in quotes because some liked it, some didn't). Another show biz fellow with railroading in his background was Gene Autry, who was a telegrapher for the Frisco and the Texas & Pacific.
I remember watching his (to me) hilariously unforgettable guest spots on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson as a kid. I'll miss him, a terrific talent.

I recall seeing a t.v. ad with him.He was in the door way of a boxcar. For for what ever reason the train started to move with a jerk.Mel said a few bleeping words.
