I just got my Penn Central N5b Cabin from Charlie Ro today.  As I was putting it on the layout, I noticed how many Penn Central pieces I have acquired in the past year.

Lionel items:

Legacy GP30

Legacy RS-11 (NOS)

N5b Cabin

Round Roof box car

MTH Items:

Premier gondola with coil load (2)

Railking N5c Cabin

Premier 70' Passenger 5 car set (NOS)

Weaver:

H30 hopper

I also have several PC items on order from Atlas O, Lionel and MTH,  There are quite a few items that I would like to have from the recent catalogs, but, thankfully, they are too big for my layout.  It is good to see that the manufacturers are offering more PC items...I think?

My train fund is taking a beating!

And then there are those of us who, if not "fans", are "supporters". I have a pair of Weaver UP E-8 A-units that will become Long Black PC diesels when I get to them. Heck, the PC is how a NYC fan like me justified getting a (PC Black) scale GG-1. Sharp.

PC Black is sort of the antidote for too many Warbonnets.

(To be honest, though the black E8's may wind up with little "CR" decals, instead...)

You mean all two or three Penn Central fans out there?

I thought the PRR and NYC bounty hunters had rounded up the last of them up and sent them the Isle of Denial re-education camps.

OK. I've had my fun with you Tom. Nice acquisitions. I wish there were more correct CNW offerings.

There is one more Doctor Peter Condro aka Putnam division has posted many a photo of the items aka worms, we will not hold it against him because he is one of the nicest guys out there.

Matt you are correct, they have to be assimilated, The Isle of Denial needs more members.

Now there are worms about, where is me shovel there is whomping to be done!

Yea.  Both of us!

Tom

count me in! that makes 3 of us!

LOL, I never said I was a PC fan, Tom incorrectly made that assumption, so it's back to just two of you!

I admit that I have a fascination with Penn Central equipment.

Of course I also have a fascination with Morticia . . . she was hot !

Then there was Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies . . . . . a bit older but still smokin'

Kate Smith . . . . . still comin' round the mountain . . . way around.

Yes, it is that Jaded green of the Penn Central.

Ummmmm, give me a minute . . .

Actually I have at least three Penn Central GG1's.

Two great cabooses by Brother Love in Penn Central.

Lots of derelict equipment prototypical, of course, to the Penn Central.

Where is Ben Fiorello when I need him?

John,

I was not assuming that you were a PC fan.  I was just admitting that there are only a couple of us out there.  However, if you want to come over to the dark side.....

Tom

All kidding aside from the other contributors, the truth is that there are enough Penn Central fans out there willing to purchase these items BECAUSE they got made.

In this day and age where road names are announced and then cancelled for lack of orders, the fact these items were produced says there was enough interest to warrant their production.

Maybe folks are just jealous that Penn Central items DO get made and the items they wanted to see made, got cancelled for lack of orders?  I'm sure the manufacturers don't mind "closet" Penn Central fans as they seem to come out of the woodwork when the products are produced.

Being a semi-scale guy, I have little interest in these particular scale items (though they do look really good!), though I do have plenty of Penn Central.

And funny enough, but Microscale continues to produce decals in Penn Central, so there must be interest in HO also. Being a semi-scale guy, I can use the HO Penn Central decals for many projects... and I do. Which also speaks of market interest: If there was enough support for O scale decals, Microscale would not have dropped nearly all of their O scale decals.

Nice looking stuff Tom! I like it. Not might not be your cup of scale, but I just got done repainting a traditional Lionel passenger coach into Penn Central, similar to your car pictured.

This is an old photo, though I still have the engine. One of my early repaint projects, where I asked myself "If the Penn Central hadn't been so cash-strapped, how might they have livened up their paint scheme?"

It could also be assumed that NYC, Pennsylvania and New Haven offerings are also default PC offerings since they stayed in those paint schemes for so long after the fact.

I'm not afraid to stand up to the hatred and derision and claim my oppressed minority status as a PC fan.

Not only that I run Conventional and have  GP38's, F3s and Semi Scale  GG1s from WBB. (I know, gasp horrors mounted on horrors.)
As time goes on I think we are going to see more Penn Central
This may hurt a little but ---
As more  of the older guys go away ( 70/80 year olds )
The kids (40s into their 60s)  do not necessarily dislike Penn Central ---  they remember it from their youth

Being an East Coast guy I find myself yearning for the good old days of  Conrail ---  almost sounds silly
Just my take

Hi, Brian.

I typically don't pay much attention to models which aren't prototypically accurate but your Penn Central FA is very creative and well done. I enjoy seeing the custom work you do with traditional equipment. The Lionel industrial switcher painted for CNJ which you posted in this week's switcher thread is excellent as well. My compliments and thanks for sharing.

Bob

Count me as another PC fan. I've painted a set of Weaver E-8s in PC black as well as; (old) Atlas F units...Atlas RS-1....MTH N5c cabeese.....(old) Atlas mill gondolas...2 Weaver GP-38-2s.....and I bought the WbB F3s when they came out.

I'm happy with all that is offered in Penn Central to help remind us all of the largest corporate failure in history (until then). When you think about the fact that PC was in existence from 1968 until the formation of Conrail in 1976.....we fans are pretty lucky.

Still think about the poor condition of the passenger fleet headed toward Renovo and north from Lock Haven as the PC trudged past our football practice field at (then) Lock Haven State College c. 1969. Dirty....ripped window blinds...and very few passengers.....ugh!

Got to get one of those new Lionel PC N5b cabeese!!!

Lionel has the Penn Central SD38 diesel loco, PC gondola with scrap load, PC N5b caboose, and PC 8-door 86' Hi-Cube Boxcar in the new catalog.

Atlas O has a Trainman Penn Central gondola in 2 road numbers coming.

Atlas just announced new road numbers for their Master Series Penn Central Caboose.

There are a decent amount of scale items announced considering it is the Penn Central.

I have several of these items on pre-order.  I am also waiting...patiently... for the Atlas O Trainman U23B.  Unfortunately, since my layout only has 42" curves, I can't operate some of the larger items.  If the SD38 would operate on my curves..."OUCH" (that was my wallet speaking)

I would like to see these scale locomotives in Penn Central paint:

GP9, GP35, GP38, SD40, SD45.

These locomotives were prolific on the PC.  They could be found almost anywhere on the system.

I'm just thankful for what has been offered in recent years.

Tom

I have mixed emotions about obtaining PC stock.

I had to cross the tracks of the North Jersey Coast Line at Red Bank every day on my way to work during the reign of the PC and the transition to CR.  I'd try to time it just right so I had to stop for a train just to see what motive power they were using (this before electrification).

Was quite sad / sombering to see the drab, well-sooted-over, livery of the rails in decay.  Guess that's why I choose the happier times of the Jersey Central.  Just too many sad memories.

I know I'm a little late to the party - actually, everyone has probably gone home based on the date of the last post - but I wanted to drop by anyway. I picked up this Lionel RS-11 in Penn Central paint from Bussinger Trains. The price was too good to leave it on the Internet shelf. I see someone else on this thread has the same unit in a different road number. This one is my third Alco diesel, second in PC colors and first unit set up to run long hood forward.

PC is an unusual shift for me. My main focus is roads in the upper midwest. I also have some Pennsy because of traveling out east in the summer as a kid to visit relatives in the late sixties (still not a lot of PC paint in '68/9). I became more affectionate toward the austere-looking black after picking up an Atlas O Century off of eBay a while back. Since then I've chased down a couple of cabeese and a mixed bag of rolling stock.

Penn Central nay not had been around long or popular like the PRR or NYC but it is a part of railroad history of those railroad lines and deserves to be represented on our layouts if desired.  I was born in 1958 so I didn't get to see a lot of the Pennsylvania, New York Central, or Lehigh Valley lines in Upstate New York running and I remember more of the Penn Central and Conrail. I do remember as a child walking back through the tractor path on my grandparent's farm back to the Lehigh Valley tracks and watching the trains go by waving to the engineer before LV shut down. That started my lifelong love of trains.

My Lionel PC sd38's are en route. I've always loved the PC. A freshly painted engine in the PC midnight black scene is very eye catching to me. I love that sd45 pic posted above. I have the JLC GG1 right now. The sd38's will be the 2nd PC edition to my collection. Strongly considering the sd45's and the Lionel 21" passenger cars. The pics above are very cool. I was born in 82 so I never saw PC in person but I love the mixed consists, and the old worn out look of most of the engines. This railroad had a lot of character in its short life, and offers a lot of modeling possibilities.

Having ridden both PRR and PC trains, I preferred PRR in just about every way.  I never had any desire to model PC until I saw the PC passenger set that Lionel is currently cataloging.  That is an attractive set - it actually tempts me - and to me it conveys the essence of what I remember as the Penn Central look, minus the "weathering," of course.

I was horrified as a kid when they announced the merger... My Dad and I were crestfallen when we saw the new paint scheme as well... I remember by Dad saying, well that's it, the "Nation has gone to a H&ll and a Hand basket"

Then I would always just shake my head when I would see new release in HO and N of PennCentral locomotives.

I remember the merger well.  It was a sad day in my mind.  Wondering what was going to happen to the Pennsy roster.  It got hit with the "Ugly Stick" big time.
