Probably to get them through the tunnels and snow sheds if they were not driving a cab forward loco.

Well, there are no snowsheds or cab-forwards on the Southern Ry (it's not an SP photo.)

Correct however, it is so the crew can breath through the many tunnels on the Southern's Rat Hole Division.  The air supply is tapped off the main reservoir.

Thanks so very much Tom.   I get a kick out of moving things around on the layout.  I like to keep scenes fresh .... just like real life .... all things change ... the only permanence is impermanence.  I do have one heck of a lot of fun too.
