The SP with the SD45 had trouble keeping its cooling water and prime movers cool on routes with many tunnels. EMD came up with a "special cooling package" for the SD45-2, the "tunnel motor", for rapid cool downs between tunnels.
For many years, diesel locomotives ahve been rated at about 44-4500 hp at the rail. Yet they do not seem to have the issues with heat like the SD45's. Why is it?
