I could use the large Roco motor from vintage Atlas F-9s (and HO scale E-units) since I have one on hand; anyone have some other ideas. I know even with the remotoring it will not be a hearty puller.
Thx-

I think the limitation is whither it will fit or not. I have one to finish and I have a nice canon motor that fits nicely in the space, I also have a corles motor that would work to. I think If you have a strong motor you should be able to add some weight. Stephen (cTr...Choose the Right)
You need to remember that the frame is plastic and, I believe, that the drivers are plastic also. I wouldn't count on this being a heavy hauler. Brass versions of this engine come up on ebay from time to time. It might be advisable to wait for one.

Around 1975, I remotored the 0-8-0 with a Pitman DC94. It provided more than enough pulling power for the short trains (7 or 8 cars) that I operated at that time. Unfortunately, I took it over to Ted Stepick's layout and we tried to pull some real trains of 15 cars on 1 to 2% grades. It didn't last long as the worm gear shaft bent. I have to admit, the engine looks pretty good in the middle of a train on its way to the scrapper.
I had a motorized version. It would pull five or six plastic cars. It was a really good looking model. I gave it away.
There is a reason the less detailed USH version was ten times the price of the plastic version. Save your pennies and buy the USH. Opinion.
Some years ago a powered metal chassis kit was offered for this engine, I believe by Locomotive Workshop.
I just put a bigger can motor in mine but I won't try to pull any long trains with it.

Yes, LWS did sell a frame and drivers set for the AHM 0-8-0. Had one and it would literally undulate upwards and downwards just rolling it on the bench while also it was also trying to make a good hard left turn. Not a single driver on center and a fiber gear that looked like it had been produced by a drunken beaver.....
Yipes! Glad I didn't get one!
