Annoying bucking in train

If they're not matched pretty close in speed profiles, that's probably to be expected.  Have you tried running them disconnected a couple of feet apart and seeing if they have widely different speeds at the problem setting?  My guess is one will be a lot faster than the other.

I don't think running a Cruise engine with non cruise will work well no matter what you do.  One will try to maintain constant speed and the other will vary depending on track conditions.  Turn cruise off on the Atlas.  G

They both have cruise... the Lionel GP30 has Odyssey1, and the Atlas has EOB.

The instructions say that the Torquemaster is responsible for varying the speed +/-10% based on the engine it's MU'd to, based on the push/pull of the other locomotives in the group.  I'm thinking that either I have to run the Lionel first, as it's faster, and the Atlas and the rest of the consist will keep up with it.

I don't want to do this, as the Atlas and the MTH GP35s' pilots are just a little more dainty, and look better our front.  IMHO...

With Odyssey 1 its not going to happen.

I suspect getting Odyssey and EOB to run together across the whole speed spectrum will be a challenge.
