My sister sent me a whole box of old family photos from when we were little. Am guessing this is 1946-49 judging by my apparent age so it may have been taken in Miami or possibly New Orleans. Looks a little like the Daylight but I'm not sure. Ay ideas?

Sorry 'bout the photo orientation Marty, I didn't have any say-so in the matter!

After a little bit of research, I found out that FEC numbered their early E-7´s in the 1000´s so its very possible that it is FEC-1006

unfortunately, I could not find anything else on the locomotive except a photo of it in the 60´s. So it most likely operated for the FEC until they stopped passenger service in 1968 and operated pulling freight till it was probably scrapped in the early or mid 70´s1960s Florida East Coast Railroad #1006 Diesel Locomotive Engine Railway Train | eBay

FWIW - the google machine provided this diesel roster list for FEC: http://www.rrpicturearchives.n...px?id=FEC&Page=2 (I searched for Florida East Coast diesel roster)

I don't see a loco #1005 on the list, though if you click on loco #1016 you'll get an E7 whose paint job looks a lot like what is shown in your B&W.  if I squint real hard looking at the B&W photo, I think I detect a 'whisker' - maybe two - coming out of the lower headlight location.  If so, that makes a pretty good case for it looking almost identical to the E7 #1016.  So maybe it was renumbered somewhere along the line?  Another identifying mark is the square object with the round 'hole' along the left side of your picture (don't know what that object is...) - the paint stripe goes right along the bottom, just like it does on the FEC E7.  You will note that the roster list only shows a couple of E7s in the inventory.

note added in proof:  The RRpicture archive shows only two E7s on their list of photos, #'s 1010 and 1016 - which isn't necessarily the entire FEC E7 roster.  Also, looking again at your B&W, I think the last digit could easily be a '6' and not a '5' - so these are all consistent with what George W posted above.

On my 27" monitor, the unit number is clearly 1006.

I believe, I believe!  But others have made reasonable guesses.  Not everyone is as ancient as Hot Water and I, and therefore perhaps not as familiar with the small details of the classic E unit color schemes of the 1940's and 1950's.  I give attaboys, though, to everyone who bravely stuck out his neck and guessed.

But the the only locomotive that could be in the photo is FEC 1006.  Among other spotting features, the black "wing stripes" on the nose door beside the headlight bezel, barely visible, eliminate all railroads other than Florida East Coast.

Florida East Coast E7A 1006, EMD Serial Number 2293, delivered in April, 1945 (one of the very first E7's delivered.)  No, I didn't have a good enough monitor to read that off of the rectangular stainless steel builders plate. I had to look it up.
