On pages 76-77 in the catalogue for the Amtrak Genesis 20-20303-1 set it pictorially shows (5) cars in the set and MTH's website shows (4) cars.  I am hoping they correct their website information as I ordered this item based on it having (5) cars in the set as pictured in the catalogue.

Yep, that's definitely the way to go if you want a quick response, even though I'm no big fan of Facebook and even less of a fan in light of today's news about their privacy policy:

I think that there some errors in the catalogs that are funny.  For instance  a couple or so MTH catalogs ago they described their hoppers as having interior lighting.  The Lionel CC set showing a reissue of a stem engine comes with a barrel car.  The guy in the car is standing and throwing barrels despite the smoke from the steam engine showing it high balling.

However, it's not funny when you're expecting one thing and get another.

Spoke with Andy Edleman today and he confirmed that this will be a 4 car set as stated in the online interactive catalog and the website.  There is now a statement about there being a mistake made in the printed catalog.  This is still a great value as a set, and there will be add on cars available for it.  I love buying the premier sets.  They are the best deal running.

The least MTH could do make good on this questionable oversight is to include a 3rd coach instead of the baggage car since one is being offered in a (2) car add on set.  I am still trying to figure out why MTH is offering a second baggage car in the 70' streamlined add on sets rather than (2) coaches or say a second sleeper car with a coach.  Is MTH saving that much money by doing this?  It reminds me of when they came out with the original 70' Amtrak aluminum (5) cars sets in the late 90's and cut out the aluminum from (3) cars in the set to make them dome cars.  I am also wondering why MTH didn't offer Amfleet cars as a (4) car set in which the real anniversary Amtrak Genesis engines pull.  Is there some kind of licensing agreement with using the current Amtrak paint scheme?

Regarding the make up of the "Add on" set... 2 of the heritage paint schemes are offered with no cars, so they offer a complete set to go with them. I dont think MTH's thought is that you buy the boxed set + the 5 car set + the 2 car addon (although, by all means go for it if you want). I'm sure you can offload the extra baggage car without a problem if you wanted.

Regarding the "why" of the old cars. According to the evil Facebook, their rationale was because the heritage units went around the country with their "exhibit train" to various events. Unfortunately, they only did half their homework (or had a C student do it for them), as the exhibit train was 3 baggage cars (which are labeled "Display Car") and a diner. So they had the right idea, but missed on the execution.

I given that the same question was asked on their Facebook page (whoops, there it is again), several times, I wouldnt be too surprised if they re-ran the amfleets again in the next catalog or 2. We're probably going to be about due for a PS3 run of AEM-7s, since they couldnt possibly be bothered to tool up the HHP-8s and offer something different.

I think we're going to see the PH IV 184 (and some other Genesis diesels), and F59s before we get another round of the AEM 7s.
