This is a really nice low time 2014 CabForward, with the 3 blinks of death, indicating main smoke fan motor problem. I suspect either the motor is shot or maybe the 1K9 driver transistor is gone, since its likely the MCRCB01 board, same as the FEF #3751, which I changed out a few months back.

What I am wondering is if anyone who has had one apart can offer advice on popping the shell off, which screws to remove, etc. Also not sure if this is one that needs the cab removed separately. So any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rod

Yes I did with the kind help of member Alex Malliae. He pointed me in the right direction and I got the smoke fan motor changed out and she's back up and running nicely again. It's too nice of an engine to leave gathering dust on a shelf!

It turns out the boiler separates right at the catwalk, and the upper half is easily removed revealing all the electronics and the smoke unit. I wish more steamers were built this way. I will post some pictures detailing which screws to remove later. Thanks Alex! I also corrected the Lionel item number in the OP, I had mis-typed it, duh.

As promised here are some pics of the dissasembled cabforward:

This shows the cab and boiler screws that need to be removed in pairs. Note that even if you don't need the cab off, it has to be removed to free up the front of the boiler.

Here is one of the pair of  screws to remove to free up the rear of the boiler:

Once you get the top off the boiler here is what you will see:

This engine is a dream to work on once the boiler is removed. I wish they were all like this!!
