Anything to do in a smaller scale in a 40 x 40 space?

How's  your eyesight? N scale or Z or do a small ON30 layout. O scale narrow gauge that runs on HO track. Bachmann makes tons of engines and freight/passenger cars in this line.

I would vote for N scale myself on that much room

OK, I know nothing about N scale. It is one of the scales I have never built with. What manufacturers have good quality locos and rolling stock? Are there any available with sound and command control? Also someone suggested wooden pull/push trains like Brio. Are those the same size as N scale?

I had a hankering to try building some HOn3 equipment and 40" square would be a good testbed for those. Please post what you decide as I may follow your footsteps.

Good quality Locos are Kato, Fox Valley Models and Broadway Limited Imports. Rolling stock from Kato, Atlas, MicroTrains. Kato UniTrack works wonderfully and is easy to use. sounds/dcc are available

Does the space connect with the main layout?

Can one see it from the viewing points of the main layout?

Carl, it can be seen from the main layout but is not connected.

If it is "connected" to the other how about an industry with some sidings to swap cars?

Yep, you can do a lot with that, as long as you use smaller locos! Look what was done with a 36"X36" square:

I was thinking of a park scene with an N scale train ride.  There could be a siding off of the main or perhaps just a passenger station that brings folks to the park. maybe a bump N go trolley line for bringing the folks.

Just a scenic treed point of interest.
