I think most of them are either 12 or 14 volts bulbs to run with their conventional engines. On the cars I have not changed the bulbs on I set the transformer to 16 volts when running command but they are still too bright.

You might consider 24 volt bulbs. At 18 volts they won't be too bright and will last a long time.

Do you have any 24 volt sources?
As I am wondering why my standard "O Gauge" train sources only have 18v?

Chipset,
We have 24v bulbs in stock. P.N. 2445LL for bayonet or P.N. 2447 LL for screw base.

You could always consider an LED upgrade.
.....or wire the 2 existing 12 volt bulbs in series. You'll need to isolate one of the ground bases. I'm cheap!

Thats what I am leaning towards, as I just finished putting LEDs into 2 sets of Williams passenger cars.
Only reason i was even considering non LEDs was that the LEDs gave off a light too modern for madison style cars.
Check my lighting kits being sold through Henning's Trains. I use warm white LED's, and you can crank the intensity down to Madison Car levels.

Nice going there now!
Couldn't resist a small plug.
What effect will 24-volt bulbs have on DCS track signal, compared to 18-volt bulbs?
Where can I buy the Bayonette type (18Volt) that I have in my Polar Express Madison cars but in L.E.D. ( Don`t want to wire just pop them in) anyone make/ sell them

This is where I buy the LED bulbs for my 022 switches.
