Yesterday was the centennial celebration of Arizona's admission to the Union.  For its part, the Grand Canyon Railway rain a train to the Grand Canyon with steamer #4960 at the head, pulling the historic Harriman coaches and with tickets priced at the same price as the trip cost in 1912: $7.50.  Needless to say it was a long train.

Despite a forecast of a major snow storm, it produced only a few inches and a beautiful clear morning.  That made for some of the finest views of the steamer pulling us with a crisp smoke plume trailing her.  The Winslow chapter of the Harvey Girls and the Arizona Mountain Men, all in full costume, wandered the train for the passengers photo ops.  At the canyon there was maybe six inches of snow, just enough to create a spectacular setting for us.  Lunch in El Tovar and then a trip back to Williams in sun and snow showers.  A great way to spend a once in a lifetime day.

Fantastic photos.  You're right, it's a great trip.  It was pulled by diesels when we rode it last year.  I was hoping for steam, but didn't pan out.

I did get to meet a train robber and his .44 up close and personal.  See my avaitar pic.

We also paid a whole lot per ticket more for the excursion.  It was worth it.
