I have just received the Atlas O SW9 (B&M), Atlas #6125-2. This locomotive was produced in 1999, and according to its former owner is now running for the first time (it runs very well). It uses the Dallee electronics for reverse and sound. I do not have an instruction book for it.

So: 1. What do the two small switches on the bottom (marked 1 and 2, each with an "on" position) control. 2. There is supposed to be a volume control. Where is it located? 3. What else do I need to know? I've found a few reviews on line about this engine whenit was released.

I have the MTH DCS Commander (50-1028) to control my Proto 2 locomotives. In conventional mode the only thing the locomotive would do is sit with the horn blaring. With the MTH ZController, the locomotive runs quite well. The Commander surprised me. Thanks, Rick

Atlas engines are mostly conventional and a few are equipped with Lionel's TMMC system. From it's age, I'd quess yours is conventional. Regardless though of whether its a conventional or TMMC loco, it can't be controlled with the MTH DCS Commander since it isn't a DCS controlled engine. I assume the MTH Z controller you speak of is the Z4000 remote controller which provides remote operation of a MTH Z4000 transformer. Since a Z4000 transformer will run a conventional engine, that's why your Z4000 remote works with your engine. Don't confuse a DCS Commander remote with a Z4000 remote as they're not the same. Again a DCS Commander controls only DCS equipped engines and since your Atlas isn't equipped with DCS, the Commander remote won't work with it.

Rick, on the loco I have on the layout, I have switch 1 on, and switch 2 off. It reverses and runs both directions. The volume control is inside the loco, you have to remove the exhaust stack set, and look down into the body with a small flashlight, it is easy to see. Don't expect a lot of volume, if the loco is pulling six or more cars you probably won't hear the motor, although the horn is loud enough, as is the bell. These locos will pull as many or more cars than most 2 motored locos, we had one on the club layout, it was nicknamed "Mighty Mouse", it would walk away with more cars than any spectators thought possible. If you like conventional power, these are good.

TAS did some extensive electronic design changes to Fit TMCC R2LC components in the Atlas SW models.   They also offered upgrades for the early Dallee powered units as has been mentioned.  It did involve a frame change to accomodate the TAS components. Unfortunately along with TAS this is no longer available.  Noted with TMCC and the SW single motor drive system, one of the best non-speed controlled units available.

It's all there including a very good motor.

The Atlas SW model has been offered as noted since the late 1990's, I think about 15 years.  Many, many different paint schemes, and as undecorated models every time it was offered.  Hopefully one or two more offerings. I have really enjoyed this model. Mike CT.
