I use both DCS & Legacy on my layout.

I was running a Lionel Legacy  GP35 last night and I turned down the volume to 0 to check the smoke unit motor. I then went to turn it back up, and nothing changed, No prime mover sounds!  I even reset the engine and still no luck. Later after turning off the layout then back on, I tried the volume up button again, no luck.

I then pressed the AUX 1 button then the volume up key  and it worked!

Why does the AUX 1 button effect this function?

Do other Legacy engine functions also depend on the AUX 1 key?

Check your manual...

From a Legacy manual (not necessarily yours)

When adjusting the overall volume, you'll hear a single bell hit that gets louder or softer
with each volume adjustment. When the volume is at maximum, additional button presses
have no effect and won't play the bell. When adjusting the background sounds (AUX1, then a
volume key) you'll hear the prime mover volume change without a single bell hit.
