But of course, I'll have both styles. For locomotives with a battery cable, the left hand model is what you need. For newer Legacy with the RS-Lite board and no battery cable, the right hand model plugs directly into the sound board.
Either of these work for conventional or command, they can charge down to around 6VAC on the track.
Now remember all these prodcuts work with locomotives controlled CONVENTIONALLY, NOT DCS, TMCC, or Legacy. IT's NOT needed for locos running on DCS, TMCC, or Legacy.
That's not universally true. If you have many of the Lionel steamers with a wireless tether, you can have sound dropouts due to pickup spacing, this has been discussed here in various threads at length. The whole reason I created the right hand version of the YLB was because of this issue, and they've been brisk sellers.
The Vision Line Niagara and Challenger both have closely spaced rollers on the tender and drop out on many switches. To avoid this annoying audio interruption, the YLB is the perfect answer. I've been putting these in most of my Lionel steam with the wireless tether.
