I have no plans on purchasing one as I can't afford it and do not have the space for a layout that would allow it. Doesn't mean I don't have the fever about getting one! That being said, How many folks are buying it and planning on actually opening the box and running it as opposed to keeping it as a collector's piece?

I can't imagine ever buying a train and not running it. They're meant to be run. If I want some sort of "investment" I will buy gold, not trains.
I know I'm getting one big boy, I've thought about getting a second. Can't wait!

Ummmm yeah.
There's no friggin way I am not running mine .
Ill run it as soon as I get it
Although I am not ordering one, since I already have an MTH model and a Sunset/3rd Rail model (#4023), but I expect friends to bring their models over and test/run them on my layout. I also run both of mine a lot.
I will run mine!!!
Mine will be running, found out today from Lionel that the VL BB will run on size 072 Fastrack
Brent
You can bet your caboose I will!!!
I'm not getting one, all diesels here, also way too much $$$ if I did have steamers. I would never buy a train that I wasn't going to run. I would never buy a train for an investment, mine are purely for enjoyment.

I couldn't agree more. Everything in my collection should be in running condition and run from time to time if not all the time.
I do not know if I can stand NOT running the VL BB after all the hype, wait and the money involved!! It will run the moment it gets delivered.
I was planning on building an 4'x16' layout, but now I have to make provisions for 0-72" curves for the beast....
I will NEVER understand how someone could spend money on a model locomotive and then not take it out of the box and run it!
Makes absolutely no sense to me.
I am hoping I can run mine, I have a lot of different curve radius on my layout.
I was able to run the Lionel Challenger, so I'm hopeful. It will not look proto typical going around the curves, that is not a concern, only if it will make it is my concern.
Soooo, if it does not take the curves? It leaves me no other alternative. Nice winter project of rebuilding.
If you have 'em, you should run em.
I run my JLC - not as often as I'd like or should, with so many other locos to run, too. With about 100 locos, every loco I have is a shelf queen most days, but Big Boy gets his share of run time.
No shelve queens here. I run everything I buy.
That's why I belong to the club (along with the camaraderie and the fun of crawling under the layout).................to run the big stuff!
I have to start accumulating some more PFEs!
Going to run it like I stole it.
You can't be scared all your life....
I'm with most of you that if you buy then you have to run it. That's the fun of getting a engine is running it.
Last July, around the first of the month, I was so fortunate to have Rich Melvin come to my home and do a Live Video of my layout. If those of you WHO follow the OGR FORUM have seen OGR THE VIDEO 10, You will see the new Lionel H7...Also many great Lionel Locomotives were in operation. The Answer to the Question,YES, We will run the new Vision Line Big Boy...Rich taught us how to really work the Legacy System to get the most out of our trains. So, Rich, Come on back to Tennessee and We Will RUN THAT NEW BIG BOY....THIS SHOULD BE A FINE PRODUCT. Thank You Rich for Your thoughts. I love the OGR FORUMS....
BTW, do you guys think/guess that this VL BB will run on 0-60" curves? I know the "recommended is 0-72", but I also know some locos will negotiate the next curve down from the recommended curve.
i will run both of mine (4024 & 4004) when they arrive and when I have time. When I am not running them, they will be prominently displayed in a glass display case as a show of brute power and amazing craftsmanship. They will look amazing even just sitting there.

because just maybe just maybe, some are hoping the price of it not run will really skyrocket and might sell it for twise the money worth.....Id had the MTh challenger rail king when she first hit the market in 96..loved it and it was my first ogauge id ever owned.....Ill never have the money to spend on that bigboy....Im happy running my 3rd rail PRR S1 unskirted duplex...rather do some up grades in the sound system then im sound as a pound.....

No. My JLC will not even come close, and I expect the V BB will use very nearly identical mechanical arrangement.
Thx a lot.
Anything I buy I run now. Didn't always do that.

I don't care how "collectible" something I buy is or is going to be -- I already have or eventually will run anything and everything I buy. It is just more fun that way.

Of course I would run it. I agree with those that have said they can't understand why folks buy an engine and never run it. Sooner or later, someone will make a better mousetrap, so having an engine sitting around hoping it will become a museum piece is total non sense.
I don't have the room for a model of the easier to rebuild 3985, so it is a non question for me!
Knocking on the door to $2,000? It's gonna' run, you can be sure of that!
Another way to look at it, Its like buying a Vette and keeping it parked in the Garage, I carom-ba! as Bart would say. Like buying a thoroughbred race horse and not running it. Like marring Jennifer Aniston and not…Better stop at the horse.
AMEN!
I'm lucky as I don't have a layout yet, so mine will be built around this locomotive. It will live on the layout, and it will run anytime there is power to the track. The BB is my favorite locomotive, this version isn't my 1st, nor will it be my last, but they will all be run.
This is great news!!! The majority will be running their BB's till the wheels turn to dust like some one says. Enjoy life with trains, it is too short NOT to runs them.
For those who can, test run to confirm that the engine is not DOA. To others I say, "Good Luck". Your purchase of a unproven product is questionable.
I really envy you guys who are going to buy that Big Boy! Those are the most awesome model railroad engines ever made! If I bought one, and I'm way too cheap, I'd have it out of the box in a second! However, I'm too cheap and no big boy ever came close to Glacier National Park. They were all "confined" to one stretch of line because they were TOO BIG in real life.
I can't wait to see all the various videos and maybe I'll be lucky here in central Indiana and someone will run one some where that I can see in person!
