If the DirectTV program guide is correct, fans of the real Big Boy and Challengers will be interested in watching today’s episode of Trains and Locomotives on the RFD-TV network.  The program guide says: “Big Boys and Challengers” Documentary (2014) Classic footage of some of the largest steam locomotives ever built.

It’s on DirectTV channel 345 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM eastern today.  It repeats at 4:00 AM tomorrow morning.  It’s also on Dish and some cable systems.  Here’s a link to the RFD-TV website to see if it’s on in your area: RFD-TV

I watched it and thought the program was good.  It had a good explanation of the renumbering and the conversion to oil in several scenes of UPRR early Challengers, and several run-by shots of 4-10-2's double heading articulateds.  There were also a few 2-8-8-0's.  This show had things you don't see often.  The program was filled out with some video of 3985's return to service, which was not as interesting to me.  There is better video of 3085 available.

Some of the footage was shot in 16-mm with sound, and, from that, I learned that the early Challengers did not have the steamboat whistle that was featured on the late Challengers and Big Boys.
