I'm finishing an installation of Proto-1 in an old Williams brass steamer. The boards are the early version with a switch for the battery backup. They came out of a working Weaver brass engine that was running perfectly when I upgraded it to DCS.

The engine starts and runs perfectly, except that the two dings on startup are followed by a pause and a third ding. Everything is mostly fine in operation - reverse, sound, it all works like it should, except that the whistle button sometimes gets you the bell, until you shut off the power. The normal one ding sounds, then there are a couple of pauses in the continued sound, then two dings sound and the compressor sound continues. It's like the sound circuit is getting a signal to start the engine again. Shutting off the battery switch turns off the sound, but it did not do this in the engine it was in before, and nothing has changed. Transformer is a Z4000 in perfect condition. No voltage leakage when it's shut off. In fact, the tender will give two dings and a compressor sound if you turn on the battery switch with the tender off the track and disconnected from the locomotive.

Some more information and thoughts on this problem:

-- What is the meaning of the third ding on startup? It goes ding-ding (pause) ding. It only does the extra ding when the battery backup is turned on.

-- I checked the ground and it is good.

-- The battery is good (a brand new NIMH cell, fully charged). I also tested it with a BCR. The BCR charged up fine, and the system did the same thing. After shutdown, it gave the two dings for startup, and continued until the BCR ran out of juice.

-- It occurs to me that the unit may have been this way all along. The board set came out of a passenger engine that wasn't used very much. I did not have a home layout for a long time, and the unit was run occasionally at the toy train museum. When it was run, it was a couple hours of continuous loop operation. The battery backup switch might well have been turned off the entire time, so I would never have known about the malfunction.

Once again, if anyone can cast any light on this issue, I'd much appreciate it.
