I just found the cause of my smoke issue. Now on to the other.

This is a Legacy engine being operated on a conventional layout. Whenever I hit the whistle on my PW ZW the engine cycles into neutral. Any thoughts here?

I'm guessing that I'm just going to have to build myself an activation button with diodes.

Your guess is likely correct. The selenium rectifier in the ZW is shot. That's why this happens. You can either install an external diode and button, or you can replace the rectifier in the ZW with a modern, heavy-duty diode. It's not that tough to do.

OGR Backshop Foreman Jim Barrett shows how to replace the rectifier in a postwar ZW in this Backshop DVD.
