With MTH announcing closing shop, I've been contemplating my future locomotive purchases. Aside from Lionel's quality problems, they don't produce much variety in my road names of choice. So, I'm thinking about low cost used locomotives that are worthy of upgrade. BlueRail looks interesting. Anyone else think so? I've heard that DCC has the best sound options.

Hi Keith, as you review your options add RailPro to the list. They are a hybrid decoder. Best in class digital sounds and works on DCC or is 100% radio controlled and powered by battery or track power. Local USA company.

You stated that better in this thread. I think you also posted in an MTH thread? I read it as the LOCO was battery powered, vs sound. (or maybe I messed up as I do speed read out of habit at times [you skip words and focus only on key words leading to first reaction contexts.]).
Any particular reason, having used DCS that you don't just upgrade used locos with ERR/TMCC? No quality issues to my knowledge. And you can continue to use DCS at the same time, which probably isn't possible with DCC, unless you go to battery power rather than track power.

ERR has limited sound choices. I wouldn't know what to order from Lionel. I'm under the impression that boards are available, but Lionel doesn't market them for upgrades, so how do you know what to order. Also, I wouldn't be satisfied with 32 speed steps. I have Legacy.

Interesting product, but it appears to be intended for DCC or DC track power or battery power. 18 VAC would exceed the 24V (DC?) max rating.
