5CF4DE59-6AE2-4D87-B4CE-C81D6AFB4603Happy Boxcar Sunday. Here’s one for today. This is a Vintage Atlas O. When these where first released by Atlas the split rail was wrong. If you fined one with the Split rail “i” is out of the ordinary it’s a rare one. Enjoy your week.

Lee, that's a good looking IC box...I've finally been taking my "boxes" and "reefers" out of their boxes to populate the layout...I continue to be amazed at the quality and detail of my Atlas cars....(I have 90% Atlas and 10% K-Line).  To see where current prices on like cars are today compared to my purchases 8-10 years ago, I guess inflation is real, no matter what the Fed says

Krieglok...nice paint job on the two boxes...

Well great to see the pictures on the Memorial Day Sunday.  Glad everyone was not too busy to post. Leapinlarry thank you for your comment on my switcher engines, yours as well for the US Army although I don't recognize the maker, is quite unique.

My offering today is more of my Marx collection.  These are two Great Northern, middle weight, 8 wheel boxcars.  Marx equipped these with automatic couplers and metal floor/frame and high quality 8 wheel trucks but kept other details (like an opening door) off and made them slightly shorter than his "deluxe" line to reduce cost.  As a result, the middle weight cars were quite economical especially for their colorful configurations and eventually became very popular with young operators who due to low cost could buy a car at the local Woolworth's or Grant's for their allowance.

These cars were made from the early 1950's to the 1960's for example the light green version here dates from 1961,  You know that the plastic used for molding often can change color slightly just depending on the "melt" which provides an endless  debate for train collectors as whether a color change is a true variant or just a drift due to production variances.  In the case below, most Marx collectors agree that the change from the dark green to the light green is in fact a variant, too great a shift and too many have shown up for it to just be a production variance.  OK  so that's the story but WHY did they change?  That my friends will remain a mystery as only Mr. Marx likely knows...

Well happy BxCarSun and happy Memorial Day to everyone.

These really look good Tom.

Do you use transfers or decals ?    Either way , you sure do nice work on them .  Nice and clear and good color saturation. 👍

Thanks J! I use mostly K4 decals. Certain sets can be a bit thin, but most are well done by K4.

The GM&O car is done using Tichy decals.  Their sets can be a bit tricky as they tend to “migrate” as they dry. They also have special needs when it comes to larger multi colored banners. They use an ink that doesn’t respond to Solvaset or other decal setting solutions. A coat of white glue on the back of the decal is needed to stick and conform to irregularities on the model surface.

I never had luck with dry transfers. I used them on 1/35 armored models but not on trains…yet.

Thank you Paul! I am doing a WAG gondola now. We need a Gondola thread!

Don, it is cold, wet and windy here in NJ. A great day for indooor modeling activities. Great looking GN cars! I like the variation in the greens.

Tom. I also use K-4 decals there nice and the artwork is amazing but like you said there very thin and you have to be very patient there not for the faint hearted.

Paul. Thanks for the complement on the Boxcar.  It’s getting harder to find these old Atlas O cars.

Well BxCrSun fans, its 4 pm here on the east coast and I am leading off the thread.  I guess everyone overslept today!  Anyway, not too much fantastic from me, just a simple Lionel "plug door" boxcar, a series I admit that I always liked and tried to collect.  It's from a fallen flag that I always liked, although it had fallen into terrible shape by the time it finally gave up the ghost... The Rock Island RR.  So here is my box car for today, the Lionel 7903 Rock Island plug door from 1983.  That sounded recent until I realized it was 38 years ago and I was just 1/2 as old as I am now (LOL)!

Lionel RI [blue) Boxcar

Best wishes everyone.  Hope you have a happy and healthy week to come.

Well BxCarSun folks, looks like I may be the first on this Sunday but its only 1418 here in Savannah, Ga so maybe some other folks will join the post.  Last week I posted the 7903 plug door boxcar for the Rock Island (one of my favorite "fallen flags") from 1983.  Well allow me to share another plug door, that in my digging around in my collection, I uncovered! (literally as it was in a plastic bin in storage (LOL) ). Wouldn't you know that Lionel went and did it again 4 years later.  Here is the Lionel .Rock Island "Route of the Rockets" boxcar from 1987.  I am afraid that by 1987, the "Rockets" didn't exist anymore and shipping on the Rock Island would have been anything but "rocket" fast, but the boxcar is neat and colorful.

Best wishes for a great Sunday everyone.  Happy BxCarSun!!

Well BxCrSun folks here it is "Father's Day" so I expect many of us will be doing something special for today.  My 50 year old son lives 1000 miles away but I know he will call and I look forward to that.  You know the last 2 weeks I concentrated on the Rock Island as a "fallen flag" with 2 boxcars from Lionel.  Today I will continue that theme for one last week only this time as interpreted by Louis Marx.

Here is the Marx #799 GE 70 Ton switcher with a short RI consist heading up the main towards the Savannah wharf area.  It has the  #147815 RI deluxe boxcar in red and the #17858 RI 4 wheel caboose bringing up the rear.

The RI boxcar was made between 1952 and 1959

Happy Father's Day to all and best wishes for a blessed Sunday.
