Nice little Boxcar and Welcome thanks for sharing.
Sometime in 1949, a photographer was waiting for a PRR freight to come through in hopes of getting a picture of a B&O Wagontop. He knew Wagontops made up only a small percentage of B&O boxcars, 4,400 Wagontops vs a total of over 35,000 box cars at that time. Well, he was not lucky that day since the freight had no Wagontops.
The freight did have a few B&O M-26 cars. The M-26 was based on the 1923 ARA design, similar to the PRR's X-29 boxcars. The B&O had almost 16,000 of the M-26 and similar M-27 cars, so they almost always show up on a freight coming through town. This is a smaller boxcar, and looked almost petite next to the Milwaukee XP.
The M-26 is Atlas, the XP is Weaver, and the caboose is Lionel.
I'm still waiting for my Atlas Wagontop to show up. It has been over a year since I pre-ordered it.
All beer.
This has probably been posted before in this thread, but with all the craziness going on we can look forward (I hope) to the holiday season in the not too distant future!
Well, CR Cole - if it's feeling lonely - you might consider adding these to your rolling stock just to make it feel like it is among friends.
@CRcole Nice boxcar and welcome to the world of postwar Lionel...your boxcar was made one year only, 1948 and also came in orange and tan as shown by Robert S. Butler. Its a neat car and a great start! Carpetrainman and Trumptrain, great cars for a hot Sunday, especially here in Texas, where it will be near 100 degrees today! Randy Harrison, your Coke set is how I got back into Lionel in the 1970's, it was an uncataloged set in '74 and cataloged in '75 (set #1463) and I bought one for my older son (then 3 ) and as they say...the rest is history
Well here is my input for today...you may know my fictional Leonardtown and Savannah serves the port of Savannah with connecting service to the north east. I managed to actually find a prototype box car in the scheme of Savannah Wharf RR which I posted awhile back. Well recently on e-bay I saw this boxcar for the Galveston Wharves...we now live in Texas about a 4 hr drive north of Galveston, so I could not resist. So here it is, from 1998, the Galveston Wharves boxcar by Lionel.

Thank you Lee! I have another dozen or so to refinish. All at different stages of completion!

Wow fellows, there’s some beautiful box cars posted this week, it’s a hot Sunday here in Tennessee. I pray that everyone that’s in hurricane Ida’s path are safe and secure. Also, for those in the western USA hopefully the fires are more contained. Our prayers are for those folks that are serving our Military and that there will be more good stories to be heard than bad ones, our Prayers for those that gave there all and there families are on going. Happy Railroading Everyone
Just a thought, there are 34,554 boxcars listed in O scale on epay.
I will NEVER get them all
Hi everyone...here it is a "Holiday" Sunday and the posts are really good and interesting. Thanks to all. Since today is a "holiday", I thought I might post something a little out of the ordinary and a little fun...sorry scale fans, this one never got close to a real railroad. The History of these boxcars is a little vague as they existed somewhat out of the public view. Every year the toy makers association sponsored a "Toy Fair" in NY city for about a business week. I don't know if this is still going on but it started in the early 1900's and was still going strong in the late 1990's. For most of the toy train manufacturer's , this was when they released to their customers (primarily the big retail buyers) what was going to be their line for the following Christmas (peak sales season). From the late 80's up until at least 1998, Lionel issued a trade show box car to be distributed to their customers at the show. Here then is the Lionel Toy Fair boxcar from 1989.
This was basically a 9700 series MPC boxcar that was imprinted specially for the show. I really liked the 1989 car because of the colorful livery and design. It also celebrates Lionel's move into "sound" for their trains. As you might expect, while today we feel sound is common in 1989 it was "new".
Have a great Labor Day weekend everyone !
Regards
Don
And, a nice one it is, Lee! As I said, I like the later versions of the 6464’s. Complete rivet detail, die cast sprung trucks, sharper graphics, and more choices!

dog,
Who made this PFE reefer? I have been looking for one with both logos on each side and with the UP in color. PFE painted their cars this way only a few years, and there are not too many models of it.
Thanks
