The first step in my efforts to enhance my modeling skills was to purchase Dennis' book - "Realistic modeling for Toy Trains -A High Rail Guide."  It is well written and straight to the point with clear instructions on modeling techniques.  I have used the information and have purchased his quality products.  My layout is undergoing a major upgrade.

I used his grey ballast on my layout...

...and two of his sand products (Superior Sand and another one beginning with "K") to simulate the sandy edge and tide line along side the roadbed (our layout is set in a beach town).
