While my room prep continues I am working on buildings and things to go on the layout once started.

Set in the 1950's I am starting an area of my major city that is.....past it's prime. Not a slum as such...but a bit run down....originally built in the late 1800's early 1900's.  The first block will be an old hotel, some type of large 3 story brick building (TBA) and a diner. I was going to build my diner but found a lot of O scale buildings on ebay that included a Plasticville diner kit.  The Plasticville diner is VERY simple and about 1 inch to long. So I removed one window segment from the front and the same amount from the rear wall. I have made a simple interior for it as the diner will be close to the edge of the layout.

The interior will get B/W checked tile floor, stools at the counter and lots of little details.....not contest build but to give the idea of a detailed interior.

Here is the diner shell so far. It will get a raised foundation and much more detail. I like the shortened look better than stock too.

I covered the engraved Plasticville with sheet stock. I also covered the roof, which was glossy smooth, with masking tape and 3 colors of gray/black.....tar lines with a Sharpie!

Lots yet to do.....stay tuned for follow ups! THX

Had some time to work on the diner. Got the shell finished, built the foundation and hand rails and did some roof top details. Still needs doors, interior finish and signage.

The back door. After a coat of Testors silver I wash the diner with Tamiya black thinned with alcohol. The foundation is balsa with 6-7 coats of tinted gesso. The hand rails are Plastruct styrene rod.

Roof top details. This is one area the Plasticville kit REALLY lacks.....the roof is void of any detail and glossy smooth. The larger turbine vent is a big HO scale unit....smae for the hooded vent up front. The J shaped exhaust vent I made from Plastruct rectangle tube. The swamp cooler is plastic shapes, a parts tree pipe and grabiron. All these were painted silver and washed.

Here is more of the foundation and front steps. The steps are balsa slabs 1/8" think stacked and coated with tinted gesso like the foundation.

I think it looks like a 1920 diner on it's last legs in the middle late 1950's.....THX
