EL,

The most basic of digital cameras will produce photos suitable for posting. You do not need very high resolution (megapixel number) photos for most web applications.

However, for layout photography, a camera with the capability of manual settings is necessary for achieving the best depth of field and exposure. Being able to set the lens aperture manually is very important for layout photography. The best layout photos are long exposure shots with the camera mounted on a tripod.

Unfortunately, this manual feature is being left off many recently produced cameras. You may have to do some hunting to find a basic camera with this option. A camera shop with knowledgeable salespeople will help.

Of course, a digital SLR is best, but is overkill if all you want is a camera for internet use. A smaller, pocket-size camera is also more convenient to carry, and more likely to be used, on trips outside the basement.
