Am trying to figure out if the Lionel Chief sets, and Plus sets, that come with a DC power pack, can be run on an AC transformer (Z-4000 or ZW) via Legacy controller. Or, can they be run on AC transformer with the remote they come with?
I have to admit its pretty confusing all the various remote systems Lionel puts out. I usually just run command via Legacy - and occasionally the original TMCC remote. These are both AC.

I know for a fact that they will run on an AC transformer and their remote. Put the transformer to full speed and use the assigned remote. As far as the Legacy system...I'm in the dark.
Like Jayhawk500 said you can use a ac transformer (set at 16-18 volts max ) using the lion chief or chief + controller . The legacy controller will only control legacy & Tmcc engines ! The nice thing is you run both Legacy & Lion chief & Chief + on the same layout .
tmcc/legacy is a control system, not a transformer.
The LionChief sets come with an inexpensive DC transformer, but they can run on AC or DC power as long as you are using the supplied remote control or, if you have the newer Bluetooth sets, the app on your smartphone.
LionChief Plus locomotives, which are separate sale items and do not come in sets, also run on AC or DC power with the remote or smartphone with Bluetooth.
Legacy is an entirely different control system, so the controller has no role in LionChief and LionChief Plus locomotives. But, because both systems operate on constant 18-volt power supplies, you can run both at the same time on a TMCC or Legacy layout. You merely have to use the specific remote (or phone) to control the LionChief stuff, not the TMCC or Legacy controller.

I got a bit worried when I read the sets come with a DC transformer.
