Upon reading the post of GREAT FIND AT THE GREENBERG SHOW AT SOMERSET N.J., it occurred to me that I have a significant number of pieces that have been boxed and not run for years, and I honestly do not have the experience to deal with the mechanical issues that might arise should I try to run one and find it doesn't work. I would not have thought about the grease hardening. I would imagine there is a wealth of experience on this forum in dealing with these types of issue.

The semiconductor chips are kind of hopeless for repair without replacing them. Beyond that, I would think anything else would be something that could be worked on with some knowledge and care. Could you give your experiences on how to go about troubleshooting and possible repairs of older locomotives?

I'm throwing this to the main forum, although I would think this would have relevance to all the other model forums... My original thought was that there would be a forum dedicated to this, but evidently not.

It would help if you would give us numbers for the locos you want to get working.  I have about 100 locos, mostly post war, and some are easy to lube, and some are not.  Lack of proper lube has been the cause of serious damage to locos, so before you run anything, you probably need to lube it.  Some locos can be lubed without disassembly, and some cannot.  The post war F3s and the Alcos need to be disassembled.  The 726/736/turbines need to be disassembed.

Spending some time this week trying to get the layout in order... I've got 'modern' production since '98, with pretty much everything under the sun - steam, electric, diesel from all the major vendors, though predominantly MTH, 3rd Rail, and Atlas. I need to take an inventory and was going to go thru each of the locos to make sure they still work - will be quite the chore, but at least it isn't the rolling stock...
