I don't think this is MTH tooling although I would love to be wrong. The previous MTH models will have a 'new tooling' icon next to it like the 0-6-0 does. It's definitely the Lionel model images but that may be all they had to go with.

Ryan has continued to bilk as much money as he can from his customers and fellow Pennsylvania collectors.   The availability of Pennsylvania LC+ 2.0 locomotives is again limited to purchasing a set. (The exception being the K4 that just arrived). I thought about the C-liners from the last catalog but it’s a scale locomotive and nothing else I have is scale-sized.  I would like the S-2 very much it’s something that I consider a must for my Pennsylvania roster but a grand for a set when I will most likely be pulling passenger consists seems excessive  

So I'm coming in late to this topic and I did quickly scan through it but I'm sure I missed a lot so forgive me if I'm repeating a previous question from someone.

1) Will the CAB3 Lionel App work without a Legacy base if the locomotive has bluetooth onboard? I know it will have limitations but the Cab3 app layout looks nice and it seems that a quilable whistle and several other settings and sounds could easily work without a Legacy base needed.

2) I noticed the Legacy steam models that will run on O31 curves do not have whistle steam this year. Why would they not? They are Legacy models. It cant be the smaller size or cheaper price because the prices are not cheap at all and my Legacy Camelback from last year that was much cheaper has whistle steam.

3) I know the LC+ 2.0 models are nice but they seem to be getting very pricey very quickly the last year or so. I know all the inflation stuff that's going on but this seems to be a little excessive. Maybe they should have kept the LC+ line along with the 2.0 line. Seems to be a huge gap now between LC and LC+ 2.0. I wish the regular LC models had fan driven smoke.

With that PRR turbine I can see a baby J on the horizon....*shiver*. I'm still waiting on my LC K4 but if they had PRR railking steam tooling offers like an L1 or M1 I would have bitten. I like the WT switcher (would love to see it sitting next to one of my GG1's) but not at that price. So nothing from this catalog, will keep my powder dry and see what volume 2 has to offer.

      I am pretty sure this is the Kline molds version of the A5 not the MTH mold. If you watch the Dave & Ryan Show at the 44-45 minute mark they discuss the 0-6-0 and the A5. They confirm the 0-6-0 are MTH molds but when discussing the A5 Dave says that prior LionChief versions were issued in the past. I too wish they bought the MTH tooling as I believe the Kline version is slightly over sized. I did own two of the Kline versions, still have one.

A few of the Angels Boxcars, the UP Lighted Flag Boxcar in CAMO scheme (will look nice behind my MTH Premier SD40-2 UP Camo).  And speaking of SD40-2's, I went in for the Louisville & Indiana veteran 3001.  I love the veteran logo, and it has that Pennsy tuscan look with broad yellow stripe and keystones!  It's built to order, so I hope enough folks jump on it as well.

So far I am in for the SF berk has a different paint scheme the the one I have. I am also in for the BNSF SW1 and a cab 3 maybe some husky stacks.

I am disappointed they were not more small loco in road names for SF and UP.

I was stoked to see the KCS 2-10-4 with the Grey boiler then I looked pictures of the real one and it is horribly wrong and all could have been fixed with brass details and they did not do the steam steam.

After a second look here are my thoughts.

1. I’ll likely buy the end door North Pole boxcar. It will look good with my North Pole gp 35.  I may also get the Christmas light house with Santa going down the chimney. I’m guessing it’s all mth tooling, with mild upgrades? I may get the North Pole Doodlebug, but probably won’t.

2. The CSX business train is really cool, but with the price and not having started my layout, this will have to be a pass. The UP rocket train is really really cool, but due to the price and size of the set it’s a no. If I was a CP fan I would be bankrupt right now. They are gorgeous sd90s in a bunch of paint schemes. The NS set is great for a NS fan,but  I primarily like csx, it’s predecessors, and ma & pa.


3. This was a really bad catalog for csx, chessie, western md, b&o, engines (the semi scale csx dash 8 and business train aren’t really in my wheelhouse) and a very good one for ma & pa which had a caboose and doodlebug (no engines, if they had one I probably would’ve bought one).

4. I’m curious what the dealer prices are after discount. The es44 went up $150 since the last time it was cataloged. I’m also curious why there was a $50 difference between the sd90 and es44. They are both huge 6 axle diesels. Unfortunately, with the used market skyrocketing, inflationary monetary policy, mth largely disappearing & supply chain issues, I kinda figured the prices would have a significant jump.

Finally had a chance to view the catalog.  Unfortunately nothing for me.  I’m a scale diesel and rolling stock guy, but nothing offered in my favorite roads-CNJ, D&H, Erie, DL&W, NYS&W, etc.  Not even a single piece of rolling stock…darn!  Maybe next time.  Happy for those who got what they were hoping for!

Not sure if I'll get anything yet, but I have a quite a few items that I want. I only have O36 curves, though so I'm limited. Here's the list:

So if anyone has mentioned the SW-1's already forgive me.  Just wondering..........How is it Lionel "has the room" to install a fan operated smoke unit when MTH said there was not enough room? Also, I think the fixed pilots make this a winner. Why couldn't MTH do fixed pilots? I stopped buying Lionel cold turkey about 5 years ago because of  issues I had with a loco 1 month out of warranty. I vowed to never buy again, however, this SW-1 gets me thinking about buying again. After all......it has been 5 years......Right? Maybe I can get over it and give them another chance.   Oh no....wait a minute......549.00 for a tiny switcher?  Let Me think this over.

The SW1 has a single motor mounted between the trucks. The MTH version has two motors mounted vertically. That's why there is more room for a smoke unit. Only the shell is MTH, the mechanism is Lionel’s.

Also consider the MTH version was a Railking intended for folks with smaller layouts less likely to have 054 minimum curves.

Atlas has some nice scale rolling stock to fill in the gaps in my pursuit of Canadian and New England road names that Lionel isn’t covering. As for comparing Lionel locomotives and Atlas locomotives, it’s apples to oranges. I think the technology of the Lionel locomotives justifies the higher cost over a comparable Atlas locomotive.

IIRC the Atlas locomotives all have sound.

Funny you should mention that. In doing an On-line research of the Lionel Conrail #8408, that was an exCNJ Sw1 with a unique Conrail switcher paint scheme.  I'm on the fence with that one.

Nothing I need and not much I want. Possibly some of the graffiti husky stacks because my wife likes graffitied rolling stock and that's an easy sell to her. The prices on them though, wow, might not be worth it.

If Lionel offered a scale Genesis in this catalog I would have been in trouble. I'm tempted by the the downeaster cabbage but with no scale Genesis to create a real downeaster consist I think I'll pass.

I don't run steam but the B&M Atlantic is tempting because I live in an area they would have operated but I have nothing appropriate for it to pull and obtaining steam era rolling stock is not a rabbit hole I want to go down.

I agree with others on the CP veterans units, I would have ordered at least one if Lionel had used the proper cab.

Lots of great stuff in the catalog just nothing that's screaming "BUY ME!!!" to me.

yes the hot wheels set is good enough for the salvage of vehicles but how do i find enough paramedic units that can operate in a mostly rail based city?

All that product and I don’t see one thing I “gotta have!”  The “new normal” for me.

Lionel has moved in directions that don’t mesh with mine anymore; I suppose that was inevitable after the last forty years or so, not even counting my start in the mid-fifties.

I run conventional. I did break down years ago and move from tubular track to 036 Fastrack. I also bought three LionChief engines recently and have a remote that will hold all of them. But that’s enough.

LC+ has gotten most of my $ in recent years since I can run them conventionally and the sounds are nice. I have even purchased a few Legacy diesels (and one Steamer) although I knew I wouldn’t use many of the features and had to pay for them to get the engine I wanted. Kinda like those packages they put together on new automotive vehicles... At the new prices for Legacy items, no more of those going forward. Hey, I have plenty of Lionel so I am in a good place anyway.

I like the “Standard O” freight car line rather well and will continue to buy from it selectively, just nothing from this catalog. I think Standard O is a pretty good value.

All that said, I do wish Lionel well with their new offerings!

At least Lionel acknowledged the real ones are actually ET44AC units and not ES44ACs as offered.  Same with the CP Military units. Like others have mentioned glad they are doing them, but was hoping for a more accurate model. So, I guess the big decision is do I drop $$$ on "close enough"? I passed on the MTH CP units because of that. (Kind of glad I did after seeing 6644!) That said, if I do pull the trigger I'm leaning towards the BC Rail HU, CN Veterans, CP 6644 and CP Heritage with script lettering. Fingers crossed on the camouflage paint....

The CP veteran tribute locomotives look outstanding! I can’t imagine anyone will be disappointed with them if the released models look like the ones cataloged. Both the CP and CN veteran tribute locomotives are the stars of the catalog along with the CAB3 and huge rocket booster train set.
