I have skimmed with some interest the discussions about containers as loads for rolling stock. I was then a bit taken aback by the prices Asked for some of the container packs... maybe I am not being realistic but $60-70 for a three pack of O scale containers? Wow.

With some digging I was able to find a Chinese die cast toy company that has 1:50 scale plastic 20 foot containers and die-cast metal yard equipment such as stackers. I think they are intended to be used on a radio control container vessel (ship) that the company sells but am not sure.

The 20 foot containers are priced at less than $8 each with free shipping to USA (note that various vendors on the Amazon-like site have various prices). The stackers are $14.20 (best price) with about $9 shipping. I ordered 4 of the containers just to try them out. Hopefully they will look good as a load on a 15" flatcar.

Unfortunately on the ordering page they don't have dimensions that I can see. I assume that they are just a touch smaller than actual O scale. The rear doors do open and they are available in various colors. Hopefully these containers will be good for my purposes- the containers don't have to be dead on authentic, just close (colorful too...).

When I receive them I'll post some photos and give my impressions if anyone is interested.

The above mentioned container loads arrived this weekend... They seem to scale out at about 1:65th if my calculations are correct for H & W with length being something between what a 20 and 40 footer should be.

Are people still interested in learning about these even though they appear to be under scale? They have nice sharp details and when viewed by themselves look good. Possibly their best use would be for scenery? Not sure...

If there is interest I will take some photos and post them in this thread. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay with the photos- I wanted to see what the containers looked like on a longer flatcar. Even though they are under scale, do you think that they are convincing enough?

Hi MG Brown,

Thanks for posting the pictures.  They do sound like they might work in S Scale.  What are the actual dimensions?  And do you have a link to where you purchased them?  The link someone else posted has them listed for more money.  I think you said yours cost about $8 each.

Thanks, Mike A.

Hi Mike:

The Dimensions are- H: 1.60" W: 1.46" L: 5.1875"

They are die cast metal, weighing about 7.675 OZ each. The end doors open easily and the details are crisp.

I found them on an shopping/auction site and the seller that I purchased from in early December apparently no longer has them for sale. Here is another seller with just a slightly higher price but with free shipping to USA:

Hope that this helps someone.

Diecast is impressive, must have missed that from earlier in the thread (or forgot already?). They look a little small, but I don't think they look all that bad. Not sure about the flat car to haul them, but if you have kids or grand kids I am sure they won't mind either one and will enjoy them. I am sure some would object, but these are also supposed to be toys for our fun and enjoyment and also for the kids. I also like the diecast stacker and I think that would look good with the undersized Lionel tractor trailers.

Thanks for the pictures.

That super stacker was first introduced back in the 1990's by joal die cast. They made a red one and a white one.

i have a Joal stacker and 2 20' containers, nicely done scale is 1/50 though, so the 20' containers scale out to a shade over 18' noticeable next to Weaver [Atlas] 20' containers, boom on stacker will not fit  Weaver containers.
