The screw tightening guy must have been on break in China and the screw loosener had to fill in. Received two units, one the front electrolcoupler was VERY loose, and another small frame screw was in the box. Same for the other unit but the rear electrocoupler and another small frame screw. Checked all the others and several needed to be tightened.

I think you'll find that many locomotives have loose screws, I get them regularly here. Whenever I have something on the bench, I check the screws for tightness as part of the job.
I received my Southern 3200 SD40 this week. The screw attaching the rear coupler was laying loose and the coupler had become detached from the wires. Also several of the brass inserts that hold the body shell on had pulled out of the body shell. Disappointing...especially since Lionel requires you to pay shipping back to them.
I received my SD40 2 days ago and one of the frame screws fell off as I was taking the locomotive out of the box. I will say this, the engine ran. My last purchase before this were two Amtrak F40PH's. Those had all kinds of issues. Needles to say, I'm a little skeptical of buying anymore Lionel stuff. I am still disappointed with the couplers they are using on their freight cars. Bring back the hidden tab couplers.

When it gets this bad it's time to move on just sayin Nick
Not time to move on, but time to open your engine and locate it's factory faults and take matters into your own hands.
A little glue at the inserts takes care of the problem. What do you expect for several hundred dollars.

19/20, are you serious with this statement/question?? I assume you’re joking. For the cost of this engine (approximately $500), I expect to receive a product that doesn’t have screws and/or parts literally falling off. Is that too much to ask?
I have my CSX SD40, in the trunk of my car, new in the box...My dealer said it’s Fine, beautiful, and will be on the layout tomorrow after church. I am so glad he checked it out. Now, While at his store in Evansville Indiana today, he was running a nice steam train with his I-Phone, so cool. I used my I-Phone 6 and because I have the Lionel App on my phone, was able to run his train to. I think young folks will really like this new technology....Wow...Happy Railroading...

Umm, the older I get, the worse my sarcasm gets
I'm simply amassed at the cost of these products and a screw can't be tightened at the factory
I laugh at these posts and am glad I am in to the old trains. So there is a wire off or screw loose, what the heck-it is 90 yrs old !!
My Southern unit was returned by the dealer, Broken couplers, loose screws , broken details and paint blemishes. I had asked for him to inspect it when it arrived and test run it. I don't think they got to the test run part. .
I. Received my two up engines and after some loose screwes which i tightened they run great. Especially. As a lash up.

Do the UP units have grey or silver trucks? I've seen both recently in the renderings.
