Hi all, how would I go about checking armature and field components for my 332AC loco? I am sure reverse unit is OK, power is getting through to the armature (sparking at contact with brushes), armature is turning freely, all wires seem to be connected correctly.
What should I do next ? Perhaps armature and/or field are burned out ? How could I detect this ?
I have a can motor to replace but I want to be sure the old motor is spent before I take this drastic step.

Do you have a voltage meter to test the parts I set it to ohm and take a reading
that should tell you if there good or not.

If I remember correctly, you should read about 1.8 Ohms on the field and less than 1 Ohm between each commutator segment(they should be even readings between all 3).

After checking with your suggestions, my conclusion is that I will install the can motor.
