After the holidays and packing up the Polar Express set from under the tree, I always clean the fasttrack with cotton pads and isopropyl alcohol. I also clean the wheels of all the cars with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol. Although the set only gets moderate use, I was surprised to see how black the Q-tips got when cleaning the wheels. Is this normal? Is using the isopropyl alcohol the best to clean the wheels or can it cause problems? Curious to what others do when packing away the holiday sets.

IPA isn't the best cleaning solution for track & wheels, something like CRC Contact Cleaner & Protectant will last a lot longer.
I use 91% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning Atlas O solid nickel-silver rails. I prefer it because it is effective at removing dirt from the rails and doesn't leave any residue.

True, but the cleaning doesn't last nearly as long as using some other products.
See this post on the dielectric constant of various cleaning fluids and their effects.

Here's the whole article on track cleaning describing that table.

Very true.
IMHO, considering it's a small Christmas layout, I don't think longevity should even be considered. Go with what gets it clean.
