Here's an online article I just saw on CNN.com's home page... might give you an idea on where to stay during your next vacation!

I can tell you first-hand that the Banff Springs Hotel is nothing short of world-class luxury that you couldn't imagine.  A nearby hotel that didn't make the article (but easily could have) is the Chateau Lake Louise, another former Canadian Pacific Railway property.  The boys who ran the Canadian Pacific Railway certainly knew how to build hotels in style.  Quite possibly the most luxurious mountain lodging I've ever experienced.  Heck, could even rate as the most luxurious lodging period!

Enjoy!!!

This hotel in Roanoke, VA is really nice and probably could have made the list in the article as well.  It is a historic hotel built by Norfolk Southern.  I stayed there 2 summers ago on a business trip, it was owned by Doubltree by Hilton then.  The town is great for a railroad fan, lots of train museums, and lots of active tracks running right near the hotel.

Yes David I couldn't agree with you more about the Canadian Pacific Hotels with scenery second to none. My wife and I stayed at both hotels this past September and what is special about the Chateau Lake Louise is that "down the hill" from the hotel is the former CP station that is now an excellent restaurant. At one time there was a narrow gauge (42 inch gauge) railway that would transport arriving guests and their luggage, switch back style, "up the hill" to the hotel.

I'll add votes for Banff Springs and Lake Louise and also cast one for Jasper Park Lodge.  Of the three though, my nod would go to Banff Springs.  Beautiful scenery; spectacular golf course and you can't beat coming back from a nice dinner in town and finding moose wandering through the hotel parking lot.

its not a railroad hotel but, I'll also throw in a plug for the Ice Fields Parkway up in that same area of Alberta.  Even if you go north then turn right around and come back south, it's like taking two completely different drives.
