I tried some searching on the forum but seem to not get the info I was looking for.

In the next year I would like to make a trip by train with some stops (preferably with sleeper) from,

1.) Pittsburgh to the West Coast and back.

2.) I could get off & on and do it in a few weeks or are there package deals that do this within a specified period of time.

3.) How far in advance should reservations be made (single & retired).

4.) Also, what is your opinion as to the best time of the year.  I know people like the Fall colors & others like spring.

I thought I would ask here since I have read many threads about trips on Amtrak, before contacting

5.) Amtrak or AAA for trips & pricing.

(I would like to have private varnish, but that is waaaaaaaay out of my price range. )

Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.

Dennis

1.) CAPITOL LIMITED to Chicago and the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR to Sacramento. The California State Railroad Museum, Old Sacramento (the starting point for CP construction through the Sierras), and a motel are within easy walking distance of the Amtrak station.

1b.) Three options from Sacramento (or from Oakland / San Francisco): A.) Ride the COAST STARLIGHT north to Seattle and return to Chicago on the EMPIRE BUILDER; B.) Go south to Los Angeles on the COAST STARLIGHT, the CAPITOL CORRIDOR, or PACIFIC SURFLINER. Return to Chicago on the SOUTHWEST CHIEF (a connection to the Grand Canyon Railway is available at Williams Jct, AZ); C.) From Los Angeles, ride to New Orleans on the SUNSET LIMITED. Return to Chicago on the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS.

2.) You can get off and on but an itinerary has to be set before a trip begins. Amtrak posts package deals / promotions at www.amtrak.com.

3.) The end of this year is fast approaching. I'm not certain how far reservations can be made for 2016. Ask Amtrak.

4.) My personal favorites are Summer and Fall, when Colorado is aglow with golden aspen. Winter (other than heavily-traveled Thanksgiving and Christmas) is an economical time to travel. Snow in the West provides magnificent sights.

5.) Before contacting Amtrak or AAA, get the current Amtrak System Timetable and Amtrak Vacations. Those two booklets provide a LOT of information. They are available from Amtrak or at Amtrak stations. Read them first.

6.) Don't assume private varnish is too expensive. Some trips are run for short distances and for the general public. I think at least one account and photos are posted on the Forum, probably under Real Trains.

Jan. Feb.Mar. are the cheapest thats when I go and the snow in the mountains is fantastic. Summer the days are longer so more daylight. The summer crowds are huge so all the scenic places the observation car is full. Before  Memorial Day is good also. Buy your tickets from Amtrak not AAA (They only do airlines well). Seniors get the best discount 62 yrs. I look on line for prices. Summer sells out fast. leave midweek for best price. If you have station close to you just go there to arrange trip. I reserve online then purchase at station. They know the trains very well to get you best room, price and train.

Looks like my best time, that I like, is spring.  I am thinking 2016.  I have to take a bus to get to a station 35 miles away in Pittsburgh.  Being a senior here in Pa. gets me free transportation by bus to just across from the station.

Lots of good info here... as usual from forum members.

Thanks so far folks.

Dennis
