Bluebeard,

This is "Joe in Maryland".  Several years ago when I agreed to convert a K Line New Haven EP-5 to 2 rail for a friend (Bob Heil of Sunset Models) I had no idea where that project would take me.  Based on the number of model locomotives I have converted to 2 rail from 3 rail, there seems to be a growing interest in operating O Scale models on 2 rail track.  I only convert models to standard O scale.  Carl Jackson in Indiana converts models to P-48 standards.  That being said, I have only had a couple of requests to convert a 2 rail model to 3 rail and I will not attempt it for various reasons.  I was fortunate to start out in O scale as a 2 railer in 1971 so I never had to make the decision.  Coming from HO scale and previously from American Flyer "S" scale. it was a no brainer for me.

As far as conversions go, I have converted most everything from a Lionel Trackmobile to an MTH Triplex.  Some are more difficult to convert  than others but all can be converted.

I am not a big advocate for the MTH 3/2 steam models.  To accomplish this feature, MTH employs split driver axles insulated near their centers (offset slightly so that the worm gear does not bridge the insulation gap) and insulated crankpins to keep power from traveling through the rods and cylinders and causing a short circuit.  It seems like and odd arrangement to me.  It does work, but when I convert one of these models I set it up as a conventionally insulated 2 rail locomotive with the fireman's side tires insulated from the driver centers.

Please contact me via email if you want more information about converting locomotive models.

Appreciate everyone's help.

I have a lot to read, research and think about for a while.

I am off to do just that and I am grateful for all the great advice and opinions that have been offered.

BTW: I visited the N&W J-611 restoration project from Chris' (CWEX) footer.  What a great project! I encourage everyone to take a look.

Thanks again,

I am modeling in 2R, code 125 handlaid track. Although I have thought of giving it up for 3R and then HO.... I cannot. I am hooked on the 2R. I model a shortline in a 12X20 area and have only 2 50' cars. They don't look too bad on a tight radius when mixed with 40' cars. I use switcher locos, 1 GP9 and still looking for a small steam engine.

I am still not sure which control system I want to use, DC, DCC or even DCS (just started looking at DCS).

Also, +1 for Andre. I believe you misunderstood his meaning. As Chris said, he is a stand up guy and a master of brass as well.
